The Project

The client was looking to develop a patient management system that helps patient to manage their daily tasks in web and mobile (responsive) experiences. This user friendly patient management system was called as iHealth.

The purpose of iHealth was:

  1. To help patients monitor their own health, manage daily activities such as medication, medical records, appointments and health progress. This will keep patients informed and aware of any changes and help them to exercise control.

  2. To help doctors remotely manage patients health.

The Team

2 Designers, 1 Project Manager, 1 Business Analyst, 2 Developers

My Role

  • Creating a dashboard for patients to quickly access their health stats such as medications, lab results, prescriptions.

  • Making health information accessible and easy to understand.

 

The Challenge

Frustration caused by complexity

I worked closely with the clients and program stakeholders to elicit requirements and ensure that I have a proper understanding of business needs expectations. Based on user research and competition analysis, I focused on the following pain points:

  1. Complex: Difficult to learn and understand medical information with no priortised content.

  2. Confusing: Impersonalized stats, lists of medical jargon and terminology that confuses users.

  3. Information Overload: No access to overall health at glance, documentation of past events and medical history, makes it difficult to find the necessary information.

 

The Solution

iHealth is user friendly, personalized patient management system that makes health information accessible and easy to understand. This e-Health platform helps patients to understand their bodies and empower them to make smarter choices.

  1. Personalized: Personalized information such as medication reminders, prescriptions, health records, appointments giving information that helps patients take control of their health.

  2. Understandable: Reduces medical jargon and presents information visually in simplified way.

  3. Holistic- Instant access to patient summary, medical history and medication. Helps to manage appointments, lab results and prescriptions.

 
 

Process: Exploring and Solving User Problems

I adopted the 4 step design approach to facilitate the project requirements

Goal Setting

I started the research stage by conducting an interview with the stakeholders and found the overall specifics of our client's business and motivation for designing their existing product. I gained a clear view about overall business approach and desired goals in the product.

Key Insight

The product had to provide a simple, personalized and intuitive user experience to succeed.

Competitor Analysis

I profiled the competitor companies and eHealth apps in the market and how they position themselves in the market. I analyzed their advantages, features and weak points in the customer experience. This provided a clear view of the industry background.

Research

During the research, I partnered with researcher to conduct interviews with patients and caregivers to understand their pain points. It is necessary to meet and try to empathize with real people.

Key Insight

It defined what features I had to include in patient management portal so that users’ needs and expectations are fulfilled.

User Persona

Meet Riya and her daughter, Jiya

Riya is a 74 year old woman staying alone. She finds it hard to keep track of her health, medications, doctors appointments and prescriptions. She relies on iHealth to manage her daily tasks and keep her daughter, Jiya, updated with her heath progress.

Key Insight

The patients felt that:

  • feel stressed and worried about missing medications

  • No visible summary of health progress

  • frustrated about long queues for doctor’s appointments

  • Hard to understand complex medical terms

  • Time consuming to manage daily activities

How I solved the common users’ pain points

Summary of patient’s health:

Patient summary allows users to be in control of their vital health stats.

Accessible and Easy to understand:

The user can easily navigate and access the health profile to know medical history.

 

Results:

The users found the product simple and easy to use and gave 5-star ratings for the product.
